Arash Torki Sharifabad
Persepolis is one of the most important ancient sites of Achaemenid period which about 2500 years ago was started to be built in the reign of Darius the Great and continued to be built for 120 years. The ancient site of Persepolis , with 13,500 square meters area ,  consists of several palaces , stairs , columns & two stone graveyards whose  number of inscriptions, engraved on them, exceeds 3000.

The only material used for constructing the Persepolis is stone. Persepolis is built on the slopes of Rahmat
Mountain. But the highlighted point , how have the big and uniform stones used in the construction of Persepolis been prepared? The stones that had special specifications which could resist against different sorts of natural forces during thousands of years.

85 kilometers to the city of Shiraz , at the beginning part of ancient site of Tang-e-Khoshk ,  there is a mountain named as Tonb-e-Karam. It could be easily seen various kinds of cutting & stone extraction workrooms there which have been one of the places to provide Persepolis & Pasargadae`s stones. It is also known as Diamond-cutting mine by Sivand residents.

Up to 150 meters height of the mountain , there are Stone-cutting workrooms. It is absolutely clear that  2500 years ago there was no diamond for cutting. So for separating stones from the mountain which some of them were more than 15 meters in height & 6 meters in width , hatchet has been used for splitting the mountain. The People of 2500 years ago splitted the mountain in such a way that four sides of the stone have been separated from the mountain. The stone split `s width on 4 sides was as wide as human body`s width so everybody could cross among them easily seeing the symptoms of the hatchet on the stones.

And in continue , the people of the ancient times as they wanted to separate the stone from the mountain completely , so they created a split in the down section of the stone. And then by using the scientific method of the expansion property of water in freezing temperature or by experiencing other methods , they separated the stone absolutely from the mountain. And the surprising point to know , they also scraped the stone in the workroom as you can see some stones with circular section in the workrooms too.

Then they brought the stones to the down part of the mountains & transferred them by the Sivand river in the distance of more than 20km to Persepolis.

But the photos of workrooms remaining till now :
